Thomas "Tom" Alexander Mayer, age 88, of Bismarck, ND died on August 3rd, 2026. He died peacefully in the hospital after a short illness, with loved ones at his bedside.
Mass of Christian Burial will start at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, August 11, at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, 520 Raymond St.
A visitation will be held from 6-7 P.m., on Monday, August 10, at Eastgate Funeral Service, 3117 E Century Ave, with a Rosary/ Vigil starting at 7 p.m.
Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.
Tom was born on November 9th, 1937, at St. Alexis hospital in Bismarck, ND To Alvin A. Mayer and Mary L. Mayer (nee Cayou).
He graduated from Bismarck High School in 1955, attended BJC for a brief time, and received an LLB and JD from Notre Dame in 1961.
Tom was married to Janice (Jan) C. Mayer (nee Dietrich) since September 1970 and had two children to the union, Thomas (Tommy) C. Mayer, and Suzanne (Suzy) M. Noakes (nee Mayer), as well as a stepson, Kyle F. Bergquist.
Tom was a kind and gentle man, beloved by everyone who knew him and respected for his ‘even keel.’ He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and a great lover of animals.
Tom worked most of his life as a lawyer, first in private practice as a partner at Fleck, Mather, Strutz and Mayer, and later for many years as an assistant attorney general for the state of North Dakota. He was also a small business owner and together with his wife, Jan, owned and operated Arrowhead Plaza Drug and Gifts for many years.
In his free time, Tom loved spending time relaxing on Long Lake in Detroit Lakes, MN. He also liked to volunteer. He was a member of the Bismarck Veterans Memorial Public Library Foundation Board for many years and received the Pearce Award in 2023 for his service there. He was a member of the Capitol City Lions Club, the Elks Club, the State Bar Association of North Dakota and served as a young man in the North Dakota National Guard. Tom was also a lifelong lover of the Boy Scouts of America. He himself was an Eagle Scout and he was a volunteer parent (and founding parent) of Bismarck Troop 2 for many years.
Tom was a prolific letter writer, master of the angry missive, feared by politicians and newspaper editors alike. In his retirement years, he and his neighbor would wander the neighborhood together to ‘supervise’ any of the city’s construction projects, providing free-of-charge tips and helpful advice to the city workers.
Tom is survived by his wife, Jan, his brothers Dan (Kathy) Mayer, Bismarck, ND, Steve Mayer, Washington, DC; children, Tommy, Aylesbury, England, and Suzy, Blacksburg, VA; grandchildren Kira and Zack Noakes, Blacksburg, VA; Dan, Ben, Max and Harry Mayer, Wendover, England; Austin Bergquist, Fargo, ND and Paige Bergquist, Bismarck, ND; along with nieces and nephews John (Kara) Mayer, Bismarck, ND, Jenny Mayer, Bismarck, ND, Matt (Onika) Mayer, Estes Park, CO, and Elizabeth Mayer, Steamboat Springs, CO.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Al and Mary L. Mayer, his sister Mary M. Mayer and his stepson Kyle.
